MobPartner Mobile Travel Study: Mobile Users Ignore Spammy Travel Ads, Engagement Increases with Relevancy and Trust

SAN FRANCISCO–Resistance to spam and irrelevant messages are two reasons why mobile consumers fail to engage with mobile travel ads, according to a new study carried out by mobile research firm On Device on behalf of mobile marketing company MobPartner.

On Device spoke with 1000 mobile users in August about how they engaged in travel research and planning, both on mobile and laptop, and what their response was to mobile travel ads along their journey.

Some 38 percent of respondents who had not yet engaged with a mobile ad related to travel, were reluctant to do so because they were worried about spam, according to the study, while 33 percent said such ads were irrelevant to them.

However, the likelihood of responding to such advertisements was shown to increase once users had engaged with a mobile travel ad and they trusted the source.

Some 32 percent indicated they would click on a mobile travel ad if it came from a trusted brand. And as many as 25 percent of those who had responded to an ad had gone ahead and made a vacation-related purchase. Users who trust the source also are more willing to give out their personal information, the study noted.

Overall, however, only 17 percent of those polled found mobile travel ads very effective, with as many as 52 percent not sure. But the approval rating of such ads soared among those users who went ahead and clicked on one (33 percent) or even booked a vacation-related purchase using such an ad (41 percent).

"Trusted brands, good offers and relevance are the biggest drivers for engagement with mobile ads related to travel," says Alexandra Travlos, client service analyst at On Device Research in charge of the study.

"Once initial barriers are overcome and trust is established, users appear eager to make use of travel-related ads to get information and even book travel," says Djamel Agaoua , CEO of MobPartner.

"This speaks to the need for offering truly helpful and relevant travel ads."

Among the most viewed travel ads were mobile video ads, with 33 percent of those who responded to an ad viewing mobile video. About 32 percent said they responded to an ad within a mobile game or application, and 30 percent engaged with a traditional banner ad.

Of those that clicked on a mobile ad, 29 percent visited a mobile website as a result, and 19 percent ended up downloading an app.

Other interesting results of the study show that, although overall the smartphone is the top device for researching travel, most people still prefer to do early research such as planning and booking on a laptop. Reasons given ranged from "It's more secure," "It's easier to compare sites," the ability to print, and the fact that many companies still do not have optimized mobile web sites.

Not surprisingly, the majority of respondents begin to think about their travel plans two to three months before they intend to travel, and price and location are the biggest factors affecting their booking decisions.

And the most frequently visited travel sites are weather sites (58 percent) and comparison shopping sites such as Expedia and Kayak (48 percent).

Key Findings from the Mobile & Tablet Summit at eTail West

The MobPartner team is in hot, sunny Palm Dessert, California for eTail West, one of the leading multi-channel and online retail conferences, which takes place from February 18 to 20 at the JW Marriott Resort. During Tuesday's Mobile & Tablet pre-conference session MobPartner sponsored lunch where our North American General Manager, Aurelie Guerrieri gave a presentation titled, "Mobile Drives Billions to In-Store Sales – Are You Ready?"

Throughout the day at Tuesday's Mobile & Tablet sessions one of the predominant themes we saw was how retailers—having embraced mobile marketing strategies—are now finding creative ways to optimize the mobile user experience specific to their customer base and product. They are thoughtfully creating relevant content to cultivate a clear relationship building strategy. Retailers are calculated in their thoughtful, responsive design of mobile and tablet sites. They build mobile apps that provide a fun and differential shopping experience to engage and excite customers and trigger the appropriate actions to drive sales, either in-app or in stores.

A resounding amount of retailers voiced a shared challenge around thinking through and measuring the entire customer journey, which now bridges all channels, from mobile web and in-app to offline in brick and mortar stores.

Some interesting findings gathered through various Mobile & Tablet Summit presentations:

– Consumers are purchasing 5X more mobile devices than TVs or Desktop

– 25% of Internet transactions are over mobile devices

– 81% of all mobile shopping is spontaneous in nature

– 65% of retail sales start on a smart phone

– The release of the iPhone 6 and 6Plus has signaled an increase in more mobile transactions than tablet – simply because of the larger product design.

On Thursday, Aurelie will serve as Chairperson for the Growth Strategies Track. Follow our Twitter handle (@MobPartner) for updates throughout eTail West.

Aurelie Guerrieri Chairs eTail West's Growth Strategies Track

On Thursday, February 19 MobPartner's North American General Manager, Aurelie Guerrieri, served as Chairperson at eTail West's Growth Strategies track. Sessions included panel discussions about globalization and marketplaces along with individual speakers from Kimberly-Clark, Bronco, and My binding. Here are some key insights from the day's sessions…

  • Globalization: Be sensitive to the markets you are expanding into. The customer is savvy and expects you to localize – and localize beyond language – incorporate local currency/ local returns/ local fulfillment. Don't localize from afar! Be sure to understand local nuances and context in order to review website content for correctness and consistency—in order to appropriately drive consumer behaviors that make perfect cultural sense within that specific local market.
  • International Expansion: Carefully consider where to expand your business globally. Capitalize on markets where you have brand recognition and where there is an appetite for your product or service. Remember to give yourself time when it comes to expansion efforts—it doesn't happen overnight! Take the time to gather data to make the right inferences so that your technology teams can optimize and accurately solve problems faced.
  • Retailers and brands need to work together to create the right environment in order to win consumer attention and loyalty
    • Collaborate on new retail experiences
    • Capitalize on behaviors that deliver value
    • Broaden your customer experience
    • Provide incentive to keep the customer engaged
    • Marketplaces help retailers to not only exponentially increase sales, but also to increase brand awareness by driving new traffic, acquiring new customer segments & servicing new geographies, through sheer volume of traffic, participating in offers and promotions, or related product features. Challenges can come into play—particularly with smaller retailers—when it comes to the complexity involved in implementation. The marketplace panel sited feeds, automation and product matching integrations as being the most challenging. Once up and running, the panelist saw the most growth from strategies where they understood and optimized their pricing model with the right product mix, or participation in daily deal systems provided by the marketplace.

Thanks to all the speakers and everyone who attended the Growth Strategies sessions. The full agenda is available online.
